Happenings, realizations, plans..

My molar broke. I popped in a piece of gum and moments later felt a crunch. Then my tooth felt weird..I later found that the gum had pulled a filling and/or sealant and what I felt was a cracked chunk of tooth. I went to the bathroom to have a look at it but couldnt see much -- I poked at it and a chunk of my tooth fell out.

This wouldn't have bothered me quite so much if it wasn't directly from a recurring dream that I, and I believe many other people, have: your teeth start breaking/crumbling/falling out.. So I called my dentist and they were completely unimpressed -- they scheduled me for an appointment in three weeks.

I never liked that dentist anyway, so I asked a coworker for a recommendation and found one that is more accomodating (got me in that day), isn't located in a strip mall, and is not far out of my way home.

The tooth is still broken..the cause was a weak (old) filling and some decay in that tooth. They xrayed it and assured me that it would be OK to wait a week until they could fix the decay and I think the tooth too.. I was just relieved to hear that the whole thing wasn't going to fall out, and I pretty much stopped listening after that.

Last night, while talking with some people at work, I realized that I make a shitload of money. Granted, I didn't leave work until 1:30am, but that is the exception. We were discussing the differences between engineering in the US and in the UK with a colleage from Swindon. The other American suggested, "Randy, you've been here three years, you're probably making $X." I initially denied it, then realized that I did in fact make just $4k less than what he was suggesting. And what he was suggesting was a shitload. I can't believe I spend that much.

Plans (1)

While driving home from work (yeah, 1:30 in the morning) I contemplated how much vacation I have left (again, prompted by the discussion with the Brit)..Sadly I miscalculated and started deciding how to use it all. The reality isn't so bad (I can take a week off nowish, a week at the holidays, and still have a couple days left over to carry into 2004), and some of my vacation ideas might still be possible:

1. Backcountry camping on cross-country skis.

  • Unusual (I think)
  • Can cover more ground more easily than hiking.
  • Get to see a nice park at a time when few people are there.
  • Can melt snow for water.
  • Cold.
  • Hard work.
  • Cross-country skiing with a large pack is probably twice as hard as with nothing on your back.
  • I have no experience with backcountry camping in summer, let alone winter.
  • What do you do if you break a ski??

2. Fly to some city in Europe:

  • Cool stuff.
  • Nobody to go with.
  • Expensive.

3. Road trip in US:

  • Cheap.
  • Lots of amazing places to go.
  • I still have everything packed.
  • I just did this.
  • With the new total of one week of vacation to spare, there's not enough time to get anywhere.

4. Visit friends

  • Don't get to do this often enough.
  • Only cost is airfare, food.
  • Everyone has stuff to do during the week.

5. Visit Chicago

  • Get to see everything I never get around to seeing in my own town.
  • Cheap.
  • I get to sleep in my own bed at night.
  • Work can get ahold of me any time.
  • Laziness might spoil any grand plans I have.

Plans (2)

I ran across 26 Things (description) a while ago but didn't pay too much attention, and didn't realize it was supposed to be a time-limited thing. Anyway, I have ideas for it.. Contemplating maybe half of the subjects I've come up with photo ideas using only people's hands and feet. I've been looking for some type of theme or project to test my photo skills and learn knew ones, and this might be it.

However, like most bright ideas of mine, I may find this completely ludicrous tomorrow morning after I've slept on it.
